    How you could develop repetitive strain injury


    Repetitive strain injury is one of those conditions which can have many causes, so asking how you could develop repetitive strain injury is not always as simple a question as you may think. However, it would be fair to say that most people who develop repetitive strain injury do so due to the conditions of their workplace.

    Despite the fact that there are so many health and safety regulations to follow, many business owners still do not do everything they should to ensure the safety and comfort of their employees, and this results in more accidents and injuries than you would think. When this happens, it may be possible for the injured party to make a compensation claim for their repetitive strain injury.

    How you could develop repetitive strain injury

    Although the things that can cause repetitive strain injury are numerous, here are some of the most common:

    • Using a keyboard incorrectly
      If you work in an office environment, and you spend a lot of time typing, you could be at risk of repetitive strain injury, if you do not have an ergonomic keyboard, due to the strain typing can put on your wrists. The design of your desk and chair could also lead to RSI if they are inappropriate for your daily use.
    • Using your mouse
      A lot of people also develop repetitive strain injury in the hand that they use to control their mouse, again due to the fact the wrist can be put into an awkward position. This is something that can easily be remedied with the right equipment, such as a gel wrist pad.
    • Spending too much time working
      If you work in an environment such as a warehouse or office, where you are expected to carry out the same task repeatedly, and you do not take regular breaks, you are putting yourself at risk of RSI, as your joints, muscles and tendons will be under constant stress.
    • Poor posture
      One way how you could develop repetitive strain injury is if you are prone to slouching, or you stand with poor posture, the risk of RSI is huge. Seeing an occupational therapist and using things like adjustable chairs can help to minimize the risk from bad posture.
    • Working with vibrating equipment
      People who handle vibrating tools, like pneumatic drills, have an increased chance of developing RSI, simply because the constant vibrations can cause damage to their upper bodies.
