Cwmbran is a new town which today forms a part of the County Borough of Torfaen, within the boundaries of the historic county of Monmouthshire, in south Wales. The town is situated at the corner of the South Wales Coalfield and has a hilly aspect to its western and northern edges, with the surrounding hills climbing to over 1,000 feet (300 m), whilst the land to the east of the settlement is the much lower lying expanse of the Usk Valley. As has been mentioned above, Cwmbran is indeed a new town and as such has a relatively short but interesting history.

The History And Establishment Of Cwmbran

There is some history of human habitation in the area which is now known as Cwmbran as far back as the Neolithic and Bronze Age eras, but the settlement itself only came into being as recently as 1949. This was in response to the 1946 New Towns Act, which searched all over the UK for suitable locations to establish new towns as a means to generate new employment opportunities and development. In Wales, the proposed location was the area to the south of the coalfield, based around the villages of Old Cwmbran, Pontnewydd, Upper Cwmbran, Croesyceiliog, Llantarnam and Llanyrafon, which became the new town of Cwmbran.

    Modern Day Cwmbran

Since its establishment in 1949, Cwmbran has seen a steady and significant population growth, so that by 2001 close to 50,000 people were recorded as being permanent residents of the settlement. This made Cwmbran the sixth largest urban area within the whole of Wales and ably demonstrates how significant an urban centre it has truly grown to be.
