Cwmbran is a new town which today forms a part of the County Borough of Torfaen, within the boundaries of the historic county of Monmouthshire, in south Wales. The town is situated at the corner of the South Wales Coalfield and has a hilly aspect to its western and northern edges, with the surrounding hills climbing to over 1,000 feet (300 m), whilst the land to the east of the settlement is the much lower lying expanse of the Usk Valley. As has been mentioned above, Cwmbran is indeed a new town and as such has a relatively short but interesting history.

In Wales, the proposed location was the area to the south of the coalfield, based around the villages of Old Cwmbran, Pontnewydd, Upper Cwmbran, Croesyceiliog, Llantarnam and Llanyrafon, which became the new town of Cwmbran.
