If you have an accident, and as a result you get a sudden sharp pain in the end of your finger after knocking it, you may have torn the tendon that straightens the end joint and this is called Mallet Finger. The tendon may tear where it joins on to the end of the bone of the finger, or it may pull off a small fragment of bone (it’s then called a mallet fracture).

The symptoms of Mallet Finger are:

    • End of finger lies in a bent position
    • Inability to straighten end of finger
    • Pain and swelling

The treatment for this condition is the finger is normally put in a splint for about 6 weeks to give it time to heal.

    What about Dead finger?

What if as a result of your job you get Dead Finger? This is also known as vibration white finger and hand-arm vibration syndrome. It is a work related injury usually caused by the constant use of vibrating tools or equipment, which creates whiteness in the fingers with tingling and numbness.  The only treatment is to stop using the tools or equipment that are causing the problem, and the damage that has been caused is irreversible.

    What about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

What if your accident injured the Carpal Tunnel bones in your hand? This is made from the eight small carpal bones and a tendon that lies over it.  Through the tunnel runs the main nerve from the arm to the hand. If the nerve gets trapped or inflamed it creates Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, affecting the thumb, index finger, middle finger and half the ring finger.

The symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are:

    • Thumb weakness
    • Dull ache in hand or arm
    • Swelling
    • Change in skin colour or dry skin
    • Pins and needles
