How Do I Know If I’m At Risk from Asbestos?

Asbestos is a material which was used in the building environment and has been around for hundreds of years. It is sometimes difficult to know if you have been at risk from this but it can cause serious illnesses, including lung cancer. It can take a long time for the symptoms of asbestos poisoning to show but it is important to ensure that you are protected from this in the workplace. If you have been unwittingly exposed to asbestos in the workplace, you may be entitled to make a compensation claim. There are several ways to know if you have had exposure to asbestos.

    Asbestos without Protection

If you have been around asbestos without the proper PPE, there is a chance that you could have been poisoned by the substance. It is the responsibility of your employer to ensure you have protection when working in construction, particularly with dangerous substances like this and if this is not the case, you are eligible to make a compensation claim. Gloves, hard hats and masks are all appropriate forms of protection which you should have used if you have been handling asbestos and the risks of exposure are much greater if you have not had this kind of protection.

    Second Hand Asbestos

It is a little known fact but if your partner or someone close to you has been working with asbestos, there is a chance that you could have second hand exposure to it. If this is the case, the employer of the person who has put your partner or loved one at risk is also responsible for your exposure and as a result, you can still make a compensation claim. Asbestos is highly dangerous and it is worth speaking to your doctor straight away if you feel you may have been put at risk.

    DIY Work

If you have been involved in building your own home in the last decade, there is a possibility that asbestos may have been used, so it is still worth having a checkup to find out. The risks are much lower if you have been properly protected at the time, but there is no harm in finding out for sure as it will help to put your mind at ease.

If you have asbestos poisoning and it is the fault of your employer, you should make a compensation claim.
