The village of Greenhead is located in Northumberland, in the North East of England. The village is situated approximately 27 km from Chollerford, 32 km from Hexham and 14 km from Brampton in Cumbria. The village lies on the edge of the Northumberland National Park and receives a good number of tourists thanks to its proximity to Hadrian’s Wall, one of the nation’s most treasured ancient monuments.
A new bypass, the A69, has alleviated the main road leading through the village. Until the 1980s, all traffic had to pass through the village, making life for residents far less pleasant than it is today.
Apart from Hadrian’s Wall, there’s Greenhead’s most recent addition to the tourist trail: Thirlwall Castle, which only recently opened to the public and is beginning to become a major attraction in its own right.
Grade I listed Thirlwall Castle dates back to the 12th century and lies in the north of Greenhead on the bank of the Tipalt River. When the castle fell into disrepair over the centuries, thrifty knights used stones from Hadrian’s Wall to patch up their crumbling castle. If one of those stones had come loose and fallen on a passing guard or merchant, the poor victim would not have received compensation from the tight-fisted castle owner, that’s for sure!
Many visitors arrive on foot, as the Pennine Way passes through the village. It was the first national trail in the country and marked the beginning of the British public’s love affair with hiking and rambling about the countryside. Given the heavy traffic that flowed through the village in the 1980s, ramblers must have taken their lives into their own hands, when they decided to stop off for a loaf of bread and a packet of tea to replenish their back-packs or picnic hampers.Open Claim Calculator
