    Internships and apprenticeships

If you are working in an internship, the point is to get you used to working in the field and the type of job that you eventually want to go into full time. This is not easy, and most internships will be unpaid so you don’t see a monetary reward for all of your work either, but nonetheless, internships are good for those who want to work in more popular industries, and people who want to start out their career on the right step of the ladder. Here are some of the things that you can expect out of your internship, and how to cope with this.

    • Making tea. It is a long running joke that interns are there to make the tea, but this is actually the case most of the time. Menial tasks such as making the tea and dealing with the post will be down to you, but you should see these as positive things. In both cases, you are dealing with people face to face, which is a great way of networking and finding out what everyone does.
    • Sitting in. You will probably do a lot of ‘sitting in’ for meetings and other tasks that you can’t really get involved in but may find helpful. In this case you should use this opportunity to learn as much as you can from what is in front of you, so that if you do get an opportunity to take part you will be able to handle yourself.
    • Meeting everyone. An intern will usually be moving around all day, greeting customers and guests, meeting other people within the building and so on. This is so important as if you can make some real connections these will be able to set you up with new jobs once you have left your internship.
