"If you've been injured through no fault of your own you could be entitled to compensation. If you're unsure if you could claim, I recommend you call Accident Advice Helpline."

Make sure your kids are safe when they play sports. Playing sports is a healthy activity for anyone no matter what their age, but you need to teach your children to be safe while they do it.

It doesn’t matter if they find it a bit embarrassing to wear a cycle helmet or knee pads, it’s better to be safe than sorry! And of course, you should always be a good example to them by wearing safety gear yourself.

Make sure that any safety equipment is in good condition. Check that catches and buckles aren’t broken, and it’s all the right size for your child.

If your child has previously had an accident whilst wearing the safety gear, discard it and get a new set. It might look OK, but if, for example, a cycle helmet has received a knock it could be split inside and you wouldn’t know. There’s no point in wearing unsafe safety equipment.

    Don’t buy cheap equipment

In a similar vein, make sure that you get safety equipment from a reputable sales place, and that it conforms to UK safety standards. Don’t go for cut price stuff from the internet that looks good in the pictures but is suspiciously cheap. When it arrives it could be too flimsy to do the job.

Make sure your child practices the sport slowly. Choose a quiet cul-de-sac, cycle path or path (not a downhill one) without any traffic for them to learn to skate or cycle on. Teach them basic kicking or ball skills before you launch them into a full scale game.

Make sure that they are not too hot or too cold as they play and that they have enough water to drink.
