    Causes of accidents in Watford

Although it is not entirely clear from where the name of the region of Watford is derived, suggestions include that it comes from the Old English language word waet, which means waterlogged or full of water. This is in keeping with its marshy landscape. Another suggestion is that it comes from the word wath which means hunting, promoting the idea that the area provided a good hunting ground for food. The addition of the suffix ford indicates that there was a river crossing point which could be used for moving animals such as cattle.

Prior to the Industrial Revolution the area of Watford relied primarily on agriculture for its economy. However the period of the Industrial Revolution saw the development of the Canals and Railway which permitted the growth of new industries. These included paper mills, brewers and an expansion of the local coal and coke production.
