    Sprained Ankle

A sprained ankle is a relatively common condition in which one or several of the ligaments around the ankle joint is torn. The main thing to check for in this type of injury is the absence of a fractured bone. However a sprained ankle can be just as painful as a fracture. The blood vessels usually suffer damage and blood and tissue fluid will accumulate in the injured area. This extra fluid will cause swelling which leads to pain. In addition, the nerves around the injury will be stimulated and irritated, augmenting the pain experienced.

There are several factors that increase the chance of suffering an ankle sprain. These include weak muscles and tendons which do not support the joint properly, inadequate warm up before training, running on uneven surfaces and wearing high-heeled shoes. The sprain is caused when the foot moves excessively in one direction and can be either an inversion or eversion injury. Diagnosis requires medical examination and usually an X Ray to rule out fractures. Treatment usually involves support, rest, elevation and using warm pads and ice. Physiotherapists can recommend rehabilitation exercises in order to maximise the speed of recovery, with the maximum amount of strength and flexibility. Most people manage to recover from an ankle sprain with a couple of weeks. However, some victims still have problems up to a year after injury. Furthermore, if you have suffered an ankle sprain once, you are more likely to succumb to the same injury again in the future.
