    Automobile accident and uninsured drivers

How big is the problem of an automobile accident and uninsured drivers?

Most of us play things by the book and make sure our cars are properly insured, have an MOT and a current tax disk, but there is a growing number of drivers who, for a variety of reasons, don’t insure their vehicles. It is estimated that over a million cars are being driven on UK roads without insurance. At around 4% of the total number of vehicles this might not sound many, but if you are involved in an automobile accident with an uninsured driver, it can cause a huge amount of hassle and confusion.

    Immediately after an automobile accident

It is standard practice to exchange details with the other driver after an accident, but if the person who has hit you says they are uninsured, call the police immediately. Get as many details from them as you can, such as their name, registration number of the car and their address or mobile number. When the police turn up, make sure you tell them the other driver is uninsured and get an incident number from them. Take photographs with a digital camera or your phone before moving the cars as this will paint a clearer picture for the police and insurance company as to the sequence of events.

    Insurance claims

If you have fully comprehensive insurance, you may have to take the hit on your own costs by funding the repairs on your car. Your insurer will be able to advise whether it is worth pursuing a claim against the other driver to cover your costs after your automobile accident or whether you may be able to claim against a special government scheme set up to compensate victims of uninsured drivers.

Does no insurance mean no money?

It’s easy to assume that the reason someone has not taken out insurance is because they have no money, but this is not always the case. Accident Advice Helpline can help you pursue a claim for automobile accident compensation against drivers with no insurance either to help offset the costs of damage to your car, or to compensate you for any injuries. Accident Advice Helpline have substantial experience in this field and as we operate on a no-win, no-fee* basis, making a claim is risk free.
