    Achilles tendon injury

The Achilles tendon is located at the back of the ankle and attaches the calf muscles to the heel. It is the largest tendon in the human body and can usually withstand forces of up to 6-8 times bodyweight. An Achilles tendon injury frequently occurs while playing sport, but it can be injured in other situations when you land heavily on your foot or twist your ankle.

An Achilles tendon injury is said to be one of the most painful injuries you can experience. Like any other injury, it has varying degrees of severity. Minor injuries can heal given sufficient rest; more severe ones could require surgery and a long recovery period.

    Symptoms of Achilles tendon injury

The main symptoms of an Achilles tendon injury are:

    • aching in the heel area which gets progressively worse, especially after exercise
    • sharp pain along the tendon
    • tenderness in the heel area, especially in the morning or after periods of rest
    • stiffness in the lower leg
    • swelling around the area of the tendon

An Achilles tendon injury can have on-going effects ranging from a feeling of weakness in the ankle through to permanent and severe restriction of movement. Given the potentially severe consequences, if you have suffered an Achilles tendon injury through somebody else’s fault, you will want to claim compensation for your injuries.
