We must learn from our mistakes to prevent accidents in the UK
Every single day thousands of people are injured in a variety of accidents in the UK. For the most part many of the accidents in the workplace or on the road could have been prevented if we were prepared to learn from our mistakes.
There is nothing wrong in making a mistake – everybody makes mistakes. The critical thing is that we learn from them. Quite frankly we are not very good at learning from past mistakes and taking preventative action. We cannot simply claim ignorance for most accidents; for example many motoring accidents in the UK are caused by people driving too fast for the conditions, people know this and yet persist in driving too fast and in doing so put the lives of others at risk. Some of the things that are likely to cause road accidents in the UK include:
- Drink driving
- Driving inappropriately for the weather conditions
- Careless driving
- Failing to look properly
If we look at this list there is nothing on it that is a surprise, and yet every day someone is seriously injured on the roads because of one of these things. We need to start to learn from the mistakes we make and others make. There are probably not many people that have not had a near miss on the roads, one of the breath taking instances when you know something serious was avoided in the nick of time. We drive sensibly for a few moments after, and then the events of the day take over and the near miss experience is soon forgotten.
Another area we need to learn from is workplace accidents in the UK. The top three causes of accidents in the workplace rarely change. They are:
- Trips/slips or falls
- Electrical incidents
- Manual handling/lifting
These causes of workplace accidents in the UK have been firmly rooted at the top of the leader board from many years. Companies and individuals need to change they need to start learning from the mistakes.
Negligent individuals and companies will suffer the consequences of their refusal to change and will continue to be the subject of compensation claims. Help is at hand for those innocent victims of a workplace accident caused by trips, slips and falls or injured through faulty electrical equipment.
