Combating the risks of sitting in an office all day
Whilst sitting in an office all day may seem less likely to cause an accident at work in Hamilton than working in construction or in a driving job, it can be just as damaging to your health as working in a job which is more physically demanding. The body is meant to move around more often than an office job allows, which is why many people working in offices suffer from conditions such as Repetitive Strain Injury and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. If you want to avoid an accident at work in Hamilton as well as any illnesses or injuries which come about as the result of sitting at your desk all day, here are some ways to help yourself.
- Take breaks. Some companies do not allow their staff to take frequent breaks throughout the day, but you should not allow this to affect your health. If your company says that you cannot get up from your desk once every hour or so, explain to them that this could affect your health negatively and that in that case you will claim compensation against them.
- Use a more comfortable office chair. A chair which gives you proper back support can be invaluable when it comes to preventing you from suffering from lower back pain and other problems with your back, shoulders or spine.
- Try standing up to work. This may be unorthodox, but many more employees are trying it every day. If you can find a way to raise your desk so that you can work standing up for some or all of the day then you don’t risk the same problems you would from sitting down all day.
- Try an exercise ball. This is something that pregnant women have been trying for years, but people working in offices have recently cottoned onto. An exercise ball means your body needs to keep working to stay upright all day long.
