Working in a driving job means that it is more important for you to stay awake and alert whilst you are working than it is for almost any other type of profession. Even if you don’t fall asleep at the wheel, simply feeling drowsy can be dangerous, as you won’t be as alert as you need to be, and may miss hazards which need to be avoided.
If you are working particularly long shifts, or didn’t get enough sleep the night before, you may find that you are getting tired in the middle of a job. If this happens it is important that you act quickly, and don’t just hope for the feeling to pass quickly.
- Pull over. If you feel that you are struggling to keep your eyes open, or just that your alertness is severely affected by your tiredness, pull over as soon as possible to decide what to do next. You should never try to persevere through tiredness by staying on the road.
- Open a window. If you can’t find anywhere to pull over right away and are really worried about tiredness, open a window immediately and take in deep breaths of fresh air as you drive. This should perk you up momentarily and give you time to find somewhere to park.
- Take a nap. If you have been working for a long time and are just legitimately suffering from tiredness, let your employer know that you are unable to carry on without a nap so that someone can come and relieve you, or you can be given a break to take a nap.
- Try energy drinks. Energy drinks and caffeine are only a temporary solution as there will usually be a crash a little while after your energy boost. However, these beverages can be fantastic in helping to keep you alert for a short time so that you can finish your job.
