How are slips, trips and falls caused?

In the workplace, it’s easy to slip or trip and then get injured from falling. It could be a twisted or broken ankle, some bruised ribs, or even a head or spinal injury that you end up with after such an accident.

Just as it is easy to have such an accident so it is easy to prevent one from happening. This isn’t to say that some accidents won’t happen; of course they will. But with a few simple measures, and a bit of vigilance, there could be far fewer hospital visits and calls to personal injury law firms.

    Preventing workplace slips and trips

Here are some things to think about. Are you doing everything you can to prevent accidents?

    1) Report any accidents or near misses through the appropriate channels. You might slip and fall, and escape injury – but someone else might not be so lucky in future. Report what happened. Perhaps other people have slipped where you did, which should prompt the person in charge of health and safety to make an assessment.

    2) Can you see any slip or trip hazards? Report that frayed bit of carpet, or that electrical cable running across the floor, in everyone’s way. Tell someone about that leak, which might cause water to accumulate on the floor.

    3) Is there sufficient light in your office or on your factory floor? This is especially important if you work in a place with few windows. Ask your employer for more lights, or to replace bulbs or fluorescent tubes that don’t work.

    4) Do your bit. Keep your work station tidy, clean up after yourself, and don’t trail cables from your PC or other equipment across the floor.
