    Tips for beating the winter blues

    Light Therapy. Beat off Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) with a full-light-spectrum lamp. These are not cheap, although prices have come down in recent years. These are great for people stuck in small dark flats or spending long hours at a desk in a space made gloomy by winter dullness. So ditch the tranqs, and buy a lamp. You’ll find them in online retailers and larger department stores.

    Maintain your exercise schedule. As far as weather permits, keep up your daily walking habit, even in the dark. Your body and mind will thank you for it, because one of the benefits of exercise is release of the “happiness hormones”. If conditions are too bad to go out, consider taking membership for the local swimming pool and gym. For an hour or two, you can forget you are in rainy, soggy Britain and pretend you are somewhere exotic.

    Five a day. Although in winter we are tempted to eat more comfort foods, make sure to maintain the fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet. Again, your body and brain needs them. If you must eat comfort food, stay away from the donuts which are fat and calorie bombs, and make a bowl of good ol’ porridge, or a mug of homemade vegetable soup.

    Keep busy. Freezing weather and dull days discourage us from leaving the house. Going to work doesn’t really count. Try to have regular treats, like the cinema, retail therapy and outings to interesting places.
