    Accident Solicitor in Lichfield

Lichfield is a cathedral city in the county of Staffordshire and reputedly the cathedral is the burial place of the Celtic saint, Saint Chad. Chad was bishop of Mercia and moved his centre of power from Repton to Lichfield in 669. It is possible that Lichfield was already a place of pilgrimage, as reportedly, Christians were martyred there under the rule of the Roman emperor, Diocletian. Chad died in 672 and Lichfield and his shrine began to attract pilgrims. Bishop Hedda had a new church erected so that the saint’s bones had a resting place, and this church formed the basis for the cathedral, (which has the distinction of being the only mediaeval one with three spires in Europe) which was extended throughout the ensuing years. St Chad is the patron saint of astronomers, and his feast day is celebrated on March 2nd. In 1538, with the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII Lichfield became less wealthy as it was no longer a centre of pilgrimage. The city’s economy fell further into decline in 1593 when a third of its population fell victim to the plague. However, things picked up in the 17th century when it became a stopping place for coaches on the Chester to London route.
