Kingston upon Thames is the main town in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, in south west London. Saxon kings were crowned there and the land belonged to them, which is presumably how the town got the name, and of course it is on the banks of the River Thames. The ancient Coronation Stone stands in the grounds of the Guildhall. The town was called Cyninges tun in 838, and by the time of the Domesday Book (1086) it had become Chingestune. Even in Roman times, Kingston upon Thames was important because it was at a ford of the River Thames. Later a wooden bridge was built across the Thames, which was the first bridge above London Bridge, until Westminster Bridge was built in 1750.

Although there are now more cycling lanes in our towns and cities, they are not always as safe as they could be. Roads which have potholes are also a danger to cyclists as a front wheel may become stuck in one and throw the rider off the bike.
