Accident Solicitor in Grange Over Sands

You might need an accident solicitor in Grange Over Sands if whilst shopping you slip on a wet floor

Grange Over Sands is a town in Cumbria. The town developed in the Victorian era from a small fishing village. The arrival of the railway made it a popular seaside resort on the north side of Morcombe Bay. It was originally called Grange but the local vicar added the ‘over sands’ part when his mail kept going astray to Grange in Borrowdale.

A tale of deception ended in Grange Over Sands in 1899 when an alleged widow, Ethel Gertrude Barton, originally from Oldham, Lancashire, rented a villa there with 5 servants. Ethel pretended that she was the widow of a Leeds architect and was due £60,000 from her late husband’s will. In order to get the money she had to prove that she did not have an illegitimate child. Another clause to the will was that she did not mortgage anything.

    She had never been married

These were some of the tales that she told Marmaduke Friers Kirkbride, a cabinet maker, in order to receive money from him. He gave her £796 of his late wife’s money and Ethel gave Marmaduke promissory notes for nearly £1,400. When he realised that he had been duped, Ethel ended up in court. Her family said that she had never been married but had always been of good character. She was found guilty and ordered to do 18 months prison service. The intriguing part of the tale is wondering whatever possessed an ordinary young woman to rent a villa, hire servants and act out a charade like that.

Nowadays, Grange Over Sands has much to offer the visitor. There is a traffic free promenade, ornamental gardens, a duck pond, golf courses, bird watching and brass band concerts. There are also lots of shops to have a look for that ever desired bargain. Imagine if you were browsing through the shelves of a shop and you slipped on a wet floor which did not have warning signs. Your holiday would be ruined and you might be off work for a long time. You might need an accident solicitor in Grange Over Sands.
