Finsbury Park is a public park and recreational area located in the London Borough of Haringey and dates back to Victorian times. The 46 hectares of landscaped gardens represent one of the very first public parks in London and offer those living in the north of the capital a wonderful place to relax and “take the air” as Victorians were fond of saying.
Finsbury Park has hosted a number of large public events including many notable music events, but it is more typically enjoyed by those who live or work in the area.
The park contains a children’s play area, a lake, an art exhibition space and a café. Its sporting facilities include a bowling green, an athletics stadium, tennis and basketball courts and football pitches.
A Parkland Walk leads visitors past formal gardens and open ground laid mainly to lawns, through leafy avenues of mature trees and past an arboretum, where past generations of horticulturists planted some rather exotic and rare specimens of trees. The Parkland Walk links Finsbury Park with Crouch Hill Park, Crouch End and the underground station in Highgate.
Owing to its long and illustrious career as an integral part of north London, the Friends of Finsbury Park, a group wishing to represent the wishes and aspirations of many local residents and communities, have published a history of the park. The group was founded in 1986 and since then they have organised many arts activities and continue to provide environmental activities, too.
