The seaport of Cromarty is located in the Scottish Highlands and is a Royal Burgh in Ross and Cromarty, beautifully situated on the mouth of the Cromarty Firth. Cromarty lies just five miles on the opposite shore from Invergordon and was once a ferry port, from where ships left to transport locally grown hemp fibre and fishing boats set out to catch herrings for the inevitable smoked breakfast kipper the British enjoy so much.
During World War I, Cromarty served as a naval base and saw the destruction of HMS Natal, which exploded on 30th December 1915, killing many people on board. Today, a four-car ferry transports people during the months of June to October across the Firth.
While it is unlikely the Cromarty Queen will capsize or explode with heavy loss of life during her journey on the Firth, ferry and cruise ship accidents do happen ever so often. Currently an Italian captain must answer for his role in a cruise ship accident that cost many lives and injured a multitude of passengers. Ferry accidents can happen anywhere at any time, and while modern safety regulations should make such an accident less likely, at the back of every ferry passenger there is the niggling question of “what if?”
If you were the victim of a shipping or boating accident that was entirely preventable and was caused by somebody’s negligence, you can claim compensation.
