A healthy diet can work wonders for your recovery after an accident
Certain foods are perfect for speeding up the healing process after an accident. Bones and muscles need strengthening; calcium-rich foods like dairy products, green leafy vegetables, nuts and pulses, as well as oily fish such as tinned sardines, help to build bones, which is particularly important when an accident victim suffered fractures.
Vitamin D is just as important. When you’re feeling better, go out into the sunshine for 15 to 20 minutes every day, as exposure to sunlight increases natural vitamin D production in our bodies. Avoid the hottest part of the day, though – sunburn is not what you are after! Sunscreen prevents the absorption of vitamin D, cutting out the ultraviolet rays which are responsible for vitamin D production. Vitamin D helps calcium to be deposited in our bones.
Include protein in your diet, as it helps to repair damaged cells and build up strength in your muscle tissue. You’ll find high-quality protein in poultry, eggs, soya beans and fish.
Vitamin C is another valuable ally in your struggle to get better after an accident. It helps to produce collagen, a protein needed for healthy bones and skin, particularly important when you’ve got wounds and burns that need healing. Fresh fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of vitamin C, such as green peppers, oranges and carrots.
Avoid things like spinach and rhubarb, as well as phytic acid food stuffs, which includes bran and brown rice. Spinach and rhubarb contain oxalic acid which inhibits absorption of calcium, just like phytic acid.
If you were the victim of an accident that was caused by somebody’s negligence, you are entitled to claim compensation, provided your accident happened within the last three years. Speak to an accident solicitor in Brighstone or other specialist to receive justice and compensation.
Compensation is awarded for pain and suffering, loss of income and any expenses you incurred during your recovery. Although a healthy diet should be part of every person’s daily life and you won’t be able to claim for the food you eat, you will probably need to make frequent trips to your GP to discuss your changing dietary needs during your recovery. Travel expenses can be reclaimed, as can private medical care.
