How to recognise a fracture
Slips, trips and falls are among the most common accidents an accident solicitor in Bridgerule will be dealing with in their career. Broken paving stones, open manhole covers, uneven pavement, slippery ramps and stairs, and advertising boards erected in the wrong place are all responsible for tripping people up who are just going about their daily business.
While most of such accidents thankfully end in little more than strains and sprains, sometimes an accident victim is more seriously hurt. Elderly people in particular are prone to break wrists, ankles and hips, as their bones are more brittle and they are less likely to break their fall safely the way a younger person might.
So how do you recognise if you have a fracture rather than a bad sprain?
There are a number of signs pointing to broken bones:
- Severe pain and swelling of the affected limb
- Inability to bear weight on that part of the body
- Inability to move the injured part of the body/limb
- Bruising or discolouration around the joint or bone
- Victim complains of a grating sensation or sound of the joint or bone
- Limb or injured body part is sticking out at an unusual bend or angle
- Bone has broken through the skin and the injured limb/part of the body is bleeding (open fracture)
If you suspect you have broken a bone, ask somebody to secure and support the injured part of your body and visit a hospital straightaway to prevent causing further injury.
