Bedwas is a town in the Caerphilly county borough and is situated about two miles from Caerphilly. The church, dedicated to the Celtic saint, Barrwg, dates back to the 12th century and has a distinctive saddle-back tower. It was first mentioned in written records in 1102. Barrwg had a hermitage on Barry Island and gave his name to it.
It was the opening of the Bedwas navigation colliery that led to Bedwas’ expansion. When the miners’ strike ended in 1985 the colliery was closed because it was considered that it had become unsafe for miner to continue.
