The village of Hindon is located in Wiltshire and lies some 16 miles west of the cathedral city of Salisbury. The village benefits from its close proximity to the West Wiltshire Downs, which are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Hindon is a planned medieval village that sprung up in 1218, when Bishop Peter des Roches of Winchester decided he needed a central place where markets and fairs could be held on a regular basis.
The Church benefited financially from such fairs and market days and it was therefore in the Bishop’s interest to drive the building works onwards – by 1218 Hindon was already hosting a weekly market and by 1250 the village boasted 150 houses. Although Hindon is no longer a market town, there is still plenty of evidence that it once was, especially from the layout of its streets in the centre.
After the fairs and market days ceased in the 1880s, Hindon rose to importance on the coaching business thanks to its close proximity to the London to Exeter route. The Angel Inn, which used to be called the Grosvenor Inn, still bears witness to the stabling services that at least 14 coaching inns and public houses used to provide in Hindon.
It seemed as if Hindon’s fortunes were assured, but in 1754 a devastating fire destroyed 144 houses of the medieval village. Although Hindon recovered relatively quickly from the fire thanks to donations that poured in from across the South of England and reconstruction works began almost immediately after the fire occurred, Hindon’s population didn’t rise as rapidly as might have been expected, bearing in mind the lucrative coaching routes the town’s inn were servicing. By the beginning of the 19th century Hindon had just 190 houses and 921 inhabitants, reducing it to village status for good. Today, Hindon has just 500 residents.Open Claim Calculator
