Have you had an accident in Hertsmere, but don’t think that gives you the right to claim compensation? Well, you’re not alone. While the media loves to talk about people who are quick to make overly ambitious claims for compensation, what’s often neglected is the vast majority to whom it simply does not occur to them. For this reason we’ve come up with a list of some of the more bizarre claims to have been made over the years to show how yours stack up.
One of the oddest of these is the example of a coal company worker in 2011 who was having a quiet cigarette in a portaloo at work. Unknown to him a methane gas leak had sprung up below him which ignited when he dropped his cigarette butt into the bowl. Aside from a clear lesson in where not to put out his cigarettes he received severe burns while his company had to pay compensation.
Other firms have talked about helping an elderly man who was injured when his mobility scooter spontaneously combusted, while another man who was enjoying the air on the balcony found the ground gave way beneath him. Elsewhere a woman was sucked into the filter of the hot tub in her gym.
In the USA the stories become even wilder and include the man who sued the TV show Fear Factor. This was known for making its contestants undergo particularly disgusting stunts and after one particularly awful example in which the contestants were seen eating rats, he was so horrified he ran to the toilet to be sick, but forgot to open the door and suffered concussion as a result.
Another woman claimed compensation against Palm Beach Council when she was attacked by a rogue goose.
An accident in Hertsmere
All of these are accidents that nobody saw coming, and it’s possible that when it comes to the examples from Stateside they might not actually be entitled to that much compensation, but what they do demonstrate is that no matter how strange or bizarre the accident might be, there is always a chance that compensation could be deemed appropriate.
