Many people take out accident and illness insurance to cover their mortgage or other bills if they are involved in an accident and are unable to work. Of course, this is a huge help to people in that situation, but if you have been injured then there can be so much more to have to pay than the household bills. These insurances do not come cheap, either — not everyone can afford such cover.
There is an alternative though, legally available to anyone who is injured in an accident that was not their fault. If this has happened to you, as long as you had to seek medical attention and you do not leave it more than three years after the accident, you can claim compensation. This comes in two parts — general and special compensation:
- General compensation is awarded because you have been injured and takes account of the severity of your injuries and how they have affected your life; and
- Special compensation is meant to cover out of pocket expenses and can include a whole range of things, such as medical expenses, prescription charges, travelling costs to and from medical appointments, childcare, help in the home or garden, adaptions to your home so you can cope with your injuries, moving home if necessary and carers if you are unable to look after yourself. These are just a few samples — most things can be reclaimed as long as your general claim is successful and you have kept receipts, or something similar, to prove you have had to pay them.
