Salford is an urban settlement which lies at the heart of the City of Salford; a metropolitan borough of the Greater Manchester urban area, in the north west of England. The settlement is located on a meander of the River Irwell, which does form part of the border between the City of Salford and the City of Manchester, however two Salford electoral wards are found on the other side of the river.

The History And Development Of Salford

In its very early history the settlement of Salford was a part of the county of Lancashire and was the judicial seat of the ancient Hundred of Salfordshire, from which it got its name. At this point the settlement was more commercially and culturally significant than neighbouring Manchester but over the next few hundred years its growth began to lag behind that of its neighbour.

Despite falling behind Manchester, however, during the Industrial Revolution Salford did still grow and expand rapidly to become a major factory town and inland port, particularly associated with the textile and cotton trades. In the 20th century these traditional industries unfortunately declined and left behind a good deal of deprivation in Salford, which has only recently begun to be arrested by regeneration and gentrification programmes.

Some of the most notable of the aforementioned regeneration programmes include that which has led to the creation of the Salford Quays development. This development has seen the location of a number of important businesses and organisation in Salford, including the new headquarters of the BBC, and has brought a good deal of investment and employment to the area.

It is partly thanks to developments such as that at Salford Quays, that the settlement boasts a healthy population of around 73,000 but having such a large population can have its downsides.
