The World’s Largest City

For about one hundred years, from 1831 London was known as the world’s largest city. The large number of people packed into such a relatively small space led to cholera epidemics which killed thousands of people in the nineteenth century. However, traffic congestion was the stimulus for the construction of the world’s very first urban rail network. The large amount of traffic, domestic fires and industry waste contributed to the infamous pea soup fogs. This problem was finally addressed following the Great Smog in 1952, by the establishment of the Clean Air Act a few years later.
