The Brecon Beacons National Park Inhabited Since The Stone Age

The Brecon Beacons National Park has been a place of human habitation since at least the Stone Age. There are around 20 Iron Age hill forts in the area, including the largest hill fort in the Southern Welsh region. During the Norman Invasion and Conquest of Britain, several castles were constructed within the current park boundaries.

Formally Recognised As A Park

The Brecon Beacons National Park was formally established in 1957. It covers around 500 squared miles and is known for being and International Dark Sky Reserve due to the fact that no artificial light affects large parts of the region, offering good star viewing conditions. The Park is primarily made of moorland with areas of forest and pasture. It has several beautiful waterfalls and caves which are a tourist draw. The moorland is mainly grazed by Welsh Mountain ponies and Welsh Mountain sheep. The region is also utilised by the UK Special Forces to train the SAS and SBS and is ideal for this due to the remote landscape and changeable, often severe, weather conditions.
