Saint Comgall was born in County Antrim in 517. He started his working life as a soldier but later became a monk and took on the life of a hermit in an island in Lough Erne, County Fermanagh. later he established the Abbey in Bangor where he implemented a strict regimen of prayer and fasting. At the time of his death, Saint Comgall was in charge of around 3000 monks.
