Travel anxiety after a car accident

It’s not uncommon to suffer travel anxiety after a car accident. Some people aren’t affected at all once they get over the initial shock of what has happened. Others might experience mild travel anxiety after a car accident; for example, they may feel nervous the next time they get into a car, or indeed the next few occasions, before the feelings subside. For others, though, the anxiety is far more pronounced and may even go on for several weeks or months.

Anxiety and panic attacks

It would be understandable to feel anxious about getting back in a car (or indeed on a motorbike, or on a bicycle) after you’ve been in an accident. However, most people will do so and feel fine when they do. Getting over that initial hurdle is often the hardest part.

However, some people will develop travel anxiety after a car accident. If this happens to you, it is important that you seek medical advice about your condition. This is just as important as providing proof of your physical injuries.

Symptoms of travel anxiety after a car accident

You may experience a feeling of dread and fear at what you are about to do – feelings that can be paralysing. You may sweat and shake, you may have trouble breathing and you may feel numbness, tingling and chills. These are just a few examples of what you may feel – not everyone feels the same.

Anxiety is slightly different in that it may make you feel uneasy about putting yourself in a situation. In this case, we’re talking about getting in a car again. Developing anxiety may not necessarily lead to panic attacks, although this can happen. However, anxiety can be just as debilitating and affecting as panic attacks.
