Top 5 causes of road traffic accidents

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), ‘Great Britain has one of the best road safety records in Europe and the world’. Despite this, every year, thousands of individuals become victims of a road traffic accident through no fault of their own, leaving them injured and distressed.

While driving safely and adhering to road regulations is imperative, you cannot be responsible for other drivers and therefore accidents on the road do occur.

The RoSPA state that road traffic accidents occur due to:

    1. Speeding
    2. Careless driving
    3. Inexperience
    4. Drink driving
    5. Not wearing a seat belt

Although inexperience can only be addressed by further time on the road, it is a concerning discovery to find that most accidents can be avoided with a little more attentiveness from drivers.

As RoSPA state, ‘driver error remains the most common cause of road accidents’. Considering fatalities alone, in 2012, over 400 deaths were caused by careless or aggressive driving, while the same amount were due to speeding.

Despite laws surrounding drink driving, it remains a leading cause of injuries and fatalities on the road. This amount contributes significantly to the one third of fatal crashes that involved ‘loss of control’ of a vehicle.

In addition to your own driving, the above cannot be accounted for, however, a number of road-related injuries are caused by drivers who have unsuccessfully determined the path or speed of another vehicle, and consequently caused a collision.

Incidents such as these can often cause complications with claims processes if drivers are unable to agree on the fault of the road accident.
