    Some tips on how to treat a sprained ankle

    So you’ve sprained your ankle? Whilst this isn’t the most serious injury around, and most sprained ankles will heal in around six weeks or so, there are some things you can do at home to treat a sprained ankle. You can take over-the-counter painkillers if your ankle is painful, and you’ll probably need to take some time off work until you are feeling better. If somebody else caused your accident, now is a good time to consider whether or not you want to pursue a personal injury claim. You could be compensated for your pain, suffering and financial losses, provided it has been three years or less since your accident.

    How to treat a sprained ankle for a speedy recovery

    Using the PRICE method and avoiding HARM is recommended for anybody looking for advice on how to treat a sprained ankle. The PRICE method involves:

    • Protection – supporting your ankle with appropriate shoes
    • Rest – it’s normally recommended to rest your sprained ankle for 48 to 72 hours
    • Ice – for the first 48 to 72 hours you should ice your ankle for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours to reduce swelling and pain
    • Compression – wearing a tubular bandage can help to support your ankle, just don’t forget to remove it at night to sleep
    • Elevation – keeping your injured ankle elevated on a pillow will reduce swelling and speed recovery

    Your doctor will also recommend you avoid HARM for the first 72 hours after your accident:

    • Heat – heat can increase swelling and inflammation
    • Alcohol – can increase bleeding and may delay healing
    • Running – avoiding running or other physical activity is recommended
    • Massage – this can increase bleeding and swelling

    It’s important to carry out daily exercises to keep your ankle mobile but for severe strains your GP may recommend that you rest your ankle for a while – they may even recommend wearing a cast for a week or so.
