A 23-year-old man has been killed in a horrifically gruesome accident at a factory in Kiambu District, Kenya.
Anthony Gitau was sliced in three by a machine that is normally designed to cut matches, and his body was still stuck in the machine nine hours later.
His case has highlighted the poor working conditions at the factory, where management allegedly lock the employees inside during the day, and fail to compensate them for any injuries despite providing them with little or no protective equipment.
Three men who lost fingers as they operated machinery said that pursuing a work accident claim was unheard of.
“We were given Sh300 (£2.86) for treatment and that was all. We cannot quit our jobs as they are our only source of income. We have to feed our families,” said Kenneth Muthomi.
The management were not available for comment.
