The symptoms of a finger injury

What are the symptoms of a finger injury?

The symptoms of a finger injury will entirely depend upon your injury and the severity of your case.

Different types of finger injuries and their symptoms

  • Broken finger: A broken finger can be painful, bruised and swollen. It may feel numb can be difficult to move independently. The finger can be pointing in an unusual direction. In an open fracture you may be able to see the bone through the wound.
  • Raynaud’s phenomenon: Fingers can be white and cold then turn blue as the blood vessels narrow and the oxygen supply is used up. When they return to being bright red, patients can also experience extreme tingling and throbbing pain. Damage to nerve endings can cause numbness along affected fingers which can make fine movements painful, clumsy or altogether impossible.
  • Amputation: Victims who have had a full or partial amputation of a finger experience stump and phantom pains for a considerable time after surgery. The patient can experience nerve pain and circulation problems indefinitely.
  • Burns: A burn can cause long-term damage to nerve endings and circulation in the fingers. If the skin is burnt or charred to a degree that irreparable damage has been done, an amputation may be a recommended course of action.
