Swimming pool accident leaves young man with broken back

By David Brown on September 16, 2014

John Landmann, a 20-year-old who was on holiday with friends in San Antonio, Ibiza, broke his back in a freak swimming pool accident. After diving into an unmarked pool, he fractured a vertebra at the top of his back and compressed other vertebrae in his back, leaving him unable to feel anything below the waist. After the swimming pool accident, he was rushed to hospital before being airlifted for major surgery in Majorca. Despite a bleak prognosis, he has made a remarkable recovery.

He can now move his legs slightly, wiggle his toes and feel a little sensation in his feet. Doctors told his family that had his spine been injured just a few centimetres higher, he could have been paralysed. Surgeons removed the fractured vertebrae from the former hockey player’s back and replaced it with bone from his hip. He is now being treated at a specialist unit for spine rehabilitation and plans to start studying automotive and transportation design at Coventry University when he recovers.

Accidents in swimming pools abroad are unfortunately more common that they should be, and if you or someone you care about has been injured, you may be able to claim compensation.

    Claiming compensation for accidents abroad

If you are injured in an accident whilst on a package holiday, you may be able to claim compensation. Provided you booked your holiday as a package deal, your tour operator should pay out in the event of a successful claim. Unmarked pools can be dangerous, as there is no way of knowing how deep they are, which can cause injuries to anyone jumping or diving in. Contacting a personal injury lawyer to find out if you’re eligible to claim is a good idea – the amount of compensation you will receive will take into account your pain and suffering, as well as the cost of any medical treatment or ongoing care you may need as a result of your injuries.
