Cape Town is not, as many people think, the capital of South Africa, but it is nonetheless an iconic city, set at the foot of Table Mountain. In Table Bay is the infamous Robben Island, the prison for so many years of Nelson Mandela. The city is vibrant and interesting to look around but it is essential, as in most big cities worldwide, to look after your valuables and to be careful where you go after dark. If with a tour company, you will be given guidance where you should and should not go, but the signs in town are particularly clear and you should have no risk of getting lost.
It’s inexpensive for a holiday but be careful in Cape Town
The cost of living in Cape Town is low, with a cup of coffee (to take a common purchase most people know the cost of) averaging around 80p. A meal is less than £5 on average and so there is no need to carry large amounts of money around and this is in fact discouraged. The pavements are generally in good condition but the city copes with its position on the lower slopes of a mountain by terracing many of its open spaces, so you must look out for sudden drops or unusually deep steps.
