    Survivor guide: Visiting Alcatraz

It’s one of the most famous landmarks in the whole of the United States, and a constant presence in the upper echelons on any ‘must-see’ list when it comes to visiting America.

Alcatraz is a destination of unrivalled history and mystery but, just like any adventure, visiting Alcatraz can swiftly be ruined by the pain of the sort accidents on holiday that replace memories with a troublesome fight for travel accident compensation.

Here’s a quick guide to avoiding holiday injuries when visiting Alcatraz:

    Know your stuff

Alcatraz was named as such by Spanish explorer Manuel de Ayala, and over the years has served time as a fort during the civil war, a federal prison, and is now run by the National Park Service.

Doing your research will enable you to pack and dress appropriately. Comfortable, sensible walking shoes are advised to avoid blisters and other injuries on holiday.

    Plan ahead

Prior knowledge, when visiting Alcatraz, can help make the most of your trip, and avoid not only accidents abroad but disappointment as well. For example, the only way to properly tour Alcatraz is with Alcatraz Cruises from San Francisco. While other companies may claim to offer it, they can only travel by the island and not actually stop on it.

    Sustenance

There is no food or drink available on Alcatraz. It is therefore strongly advised that you pack your own supplies, and it’s always worth taking a little extra in case you miss your intended boat back.

    Equipment

Be wary of the weather and pack accordingly. Many people suffer illnesses on holiday simply because they are not prepared for the conditions. Whether it’s raincoats or sun-hats, whatever you can take to prevent you falling ill on holiday is worthwhile.

    Transport

Though the boat ride is only 15 minutes each way, this is still sometimes enough for people to get sea-sick. If you are prone to bouts of queasiness on board a ship, medication is advised.
