Survivor Guide: Mowing the lawn

With spring just around the corner, everyone with even a tiny patch of grass is thinking about mowing the lawn. This apparently harmless way of getting your garden back into shape is not as safe and easy as you may think and almost 7,000 accidents involving lawn mowers pass through UK A&E departments every year. Many of these are simple accidents of course, with no fault attributable to a third party, but they can be very much reduced if a little basic care is taken.

Don’t be an accidental victim

  • Never, ever, mow the lawn when children are nearby. Children and spinning blades don’t mix well.
  • Lead the electric cable back behind you over your shoulder. Spinning blades and electricity are almost as bad a mix as the one above, if not worse!
  • Keep your mower well maintained. If you have the ‘hover’ type, the plastic can get brittle over winter and can break off easily, doing a lot of damage to anything in its path.
  • If the mower gets jammed, unplug it before you deal with it. Obvious advice, perhaps, but often forgotten.
  • Check the lawn for discarded dog bones, toys and rocks – hit by a mower the ‘shrapnel’ can be very dangerous as well as bad for the mower.

I was hurt as my neighbour mowed his lawn. Can I claim?

It is possible to be too careful in this life and not many people would go inside to hide when a neighbour mowed his lawn; this is what is called reasonable behaviour. If you are behaving reasonably and not leaning over the fence and putting yourself in the danger zone, you can consider yourself to be not in harm’s way. If your neighbour has not taken care to clear the lawn of debris and something hits you, you may have a claim for compensation, if you are injured. Call Accident Advice Helpline with details of what happened and one of our professional and experienced staff will be able to help you through the process of a claim.

Are you eligible?

We just ask that before calling you are sure that the accident was not your fault, that it happened in the last three years and that you sought medical assistance for the injury at the time or shortly thereafter. If all these are true statements, then it will be well worth the call – it is free and because we work no win no fee*, you won’t be asked for any upfront fees once we begin work either.
