    Surgical site infection claim

If you’ve been thinking about making a surgical site infection claim but you don’t know where to start, our friendly team at Accident Advice Helpline can assist you. Our lines are open round the clock, calling is free, and we’re always ready to listen. We deal with a large number of medical negligence claims every year so after a short chat we’ll usually be able to tell you if your case is likely to be successful. Sometimes we’re also able to estimate how much compensation you could be entitled to.

What is a surgical site infection?

A surgical site infection is an infection that begins in a wound left after surgery. Between one and three percent of people who have surgery suffer infections like this. If caught early, they are often nothing more than a minor annoyance, but if they spread they can quickly become dangerous. If a wound starts to emit a cloudy fluid, if the area around it turns red or if you develop a fever, something could be very seriously wrong.

If you have left hospital and have been given proper instructions on how to care for your wound but it gets infected anyway, you will not normally be able to make a claim. If, however, it gets infected whilst you are still an inpatient, you may be able to claim, as at this stage the hospital staff are responsible for looking after your wound and making sure it stays clean. If you develop problems within just a day or so of leaving, or immediately after outpatient surgery, you should seek advice, as this may well indicate that the infection was caused by a hospital error.

    How to make a claim

At Accident Advice Helpline we will never pressure you into making a claim with us but if you decide you want to do so, we’re happy to help. We have a number of expert medical negligence solicitors on our books that are experienced in handling cases of this type. Because the law relating to medical cases can be complex it’s really important to have specialist representation. As we use a no win, no fee system, you won’t need to worry about the cost of doing things this way and you won’t be easily outmatched by a better legal team on the other side.

We can arrange for you to conduct all dealings with your solicitor over the phone, so that you don’t have to worry about travelling around if you’re still not in great shape. Sometimes it isn’t even necessary for our clients to appear in court. Our aim is to keep the whole process as simple as possible because the way we see it, you’ve been through enough.

If your claim is successful, you can expect a sum of money proportionate to how severely the infection affected you, and one that also accounts for financial losses such as those caused by time you were forced to take off work. Compensation is designed to help set things to rights so you can get back to focusing on the things that matter most.
