    Suffering knee injury ligament damage

Did you know that the knee is one of the largest and most complex joints in the entire body? Knee injury ligament damage is often caused as the result of a knock to the knee, for example whilst playing sports or in a road traffic accident – or after a slip, trip or fall. There are four ligaments in the knee which could be injured:

    • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
    • Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)
    • Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)
    • Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)

Ligament injuries could involve a sprain or tear and they can be partial or complete. If you have suffered an injury to a ligament, you could claim personal injury compensation if somebody else caused your accident. Accident Advice Helpline could help you to make a 100% no-win, no-fee* claim.

What is the prognosis for knee injury ligament damage?

If you have suffered knee injury ligament damage, you may experience pain, swelling and reduced movement in your knee which could cause you to walk with a limp. It is important to have any injury properly assessed by a doctor to ensure you get the correct diagnosis. For the first 48 to 72 hours after suffering a knee ligament injury, you will normally be recommended to follow the PRICE routine:

    • Protect
    • Rest
    • Ice
    • Compression
    • Elevation

Resting your knee, using ice to reduce swelling, wearing a compression bandage and keeping your knee elevated can help a speedy recovery. In the event of a serious knee ligament injury, you may need to have physiotherapy or surgery, or your doctor may suggest that you wear a knee brace to keep your knee stable.
