Staying safe in Snowdonia

Snowdonia, in North Wales is a popular place to visit for hikers and climbers alike. One of the main focal points in Snowdonia is the mountain, Snowdon which attracts many visitors each year.

When climbing any mountain you need to keep yourself safe to avoid any slips, trips or falls which, when high up, could prove fatal if you aren’t careful. Here are some tips towards staying safe in Snowdonia.

What could cause a slip, trip and fall and what actions are best for staying safe in Snowdonia?

As mountain climbing is a popular activity to do in this area there is a higher risk of having a slip, trip or fall especially in the cold weather when the ground is snow covered or icy. Many factors could be involved in a slip, trip or fall from poor visibility, uneven or slippery ground to the weather and also your health.

What can I do to prevent an accident claim before setting off to climb Snowdon?

If you are planning on climbing Snowdon there are many things you need to think about to avoid a slip, trip or fall. First of all make sure you are in good health. If you are feeling unwell then think again. As you ascend the mountain the air gets thinner so if you feel unwell now you will most likely feel a lot worse and may feel your concentration lessen, thus making a slip, trip or fall more likely. Before you head off to make the climb you also need to make sure you have plenty of supplies such as water and food so that you don’t end up dehydrated and hungry. You need as much energy as possible and you won’t have this available when you are hungry or thirsty. You also need to make sure you are wearing the correct clothing and wrap up warm, as temperatures can suddenly drop near the summit.

How do I prevent a slip, trip or fall when ascending the mountain?

The main thing you need to do is to take it slow. There is no rush when climbing a mountain and if you take it at your own pace then you will be more aware of your surroundings and you will find it easier to pick out the best route.
