Slip and trip claims

Slip and trip claims are amongst the most common types of claim in the UK. They are caused by a range of factors and can result in a variety of injuries from minor cuts and bruising, to broken bones and even permanent disability.

What causes slip and trip claims?

Mostly, slip and trip claims are caused by either a defect in the floor surface, or a floor surface that is more slippery than usual.

Defects in the floor surface can include cracked pavement surfaces or uneven paving slabs.

Slippery floor surfaces can be caused by using the wrong flooring material, such as not using a non-slip material in an area where the floor is likely to get wet such as around a swimming pool or in a toilet.

They can also be caused by something on the floor surface. This could be something which has not been cleared, such as snow or ice in the winter, or a spillage that has not been dealt with. It can also include situations where someone has cleaned or polished the floor but failed to provide a warning that the floor will be slippery.

How do you get compensation for slip and trip claims?

First, you can only get compensation for slip and trip claims if it was someone else’s fault. If you simply fall over, you have nobody to blame other than yourself.

It is a good idea to take photographs of whatever caused your accident. If you tripped due to uneven paving slabs, you should take pictures of the paving slabs. If you have incurred any financial losses as a result of your accident, such as travel costs or lost wages, you should make sure you have documentation to verify that element of your claim.

Claims need to be made within three years of your accident, although the earlier you start your claim the better, because by doing so, the facts will be clearer in your mind and it will be easier to gather any evidence you need to support your claim.

You can make the compensation claim yourself, but you stand more chance of getting the full amount of compensation that you deserve if you use a lawyer or a professional claims management company such as Accident Advice Helpline.
