Sciatica is the name given to any sort of aches and pains caused by damage to the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in our bodies. The nerve runs from the back of our pelvis, through our buttocks, down our legs and into our feet. Anything that causes this nerve to become irritated or compressed will create the pain that can vary, not just from victim to victim, but also day to day for those victims.

Unlike other back problems, the pain of this condition hardly affects the back at all but tends to be in the very bottom of the back, the buttocks and legs, quite often being very painful in the calf. It can also cause numbness, tingling sensations and muscle weakness.

The causes of sciatica

There are several causes of this problem, one of them being damage caused in an accident. If the accident damages one of the vertebrae that protects the nerve, the victim is likely to suffer from this very painful condition. If the accident that causes the injury was the fault of someone else, the victim could be entitled to compensation from the responsible party.

The treatment of sciatica

A mild case of sciatica will heal in a few weeks and just needs some exercise, painkillers and maybe ice packs to reduce any swelling.

If you still have the problem after 6 weeks it is known as chronic, and then you may need physiotherapy, and if the painkillers are not working, a corticosteroid injection may be offered to reduce the inflammation around your spine.

Being as active as the pain allows is important, otherwise you will start to stiffen and the pain will get worse. Exercise also stimulates the productions of endorphins, a natural painkiller.

Claiming compensation

If you have been caused the pain and discomfort of sciatica through the fault of someone else, you could be entitled to compensation, as you are with any other injury that was not your fault.
