Safety tips for using a pillar drill

Pillar drills are free-standing machines used to holes of varying diameters into metal, wood, plastic and other materials. Unless used safely, these machines can cause potentially serious accidents at work. Here are some tips on safely using a pillar drill.

Potential causes of pillar drill accidents

Pillar drills use motors to rotate drill bits. Injuries at work while using a pillar drill may be caused by:

  • Accidental contact with moving parts of machinery
  • Clothing, jewellery or long hair getting caught in the machine
  • Flying bits of drilled material hitting your face, head or body
  • Faulty machinery causing injuries by electrocution or being hit by flying objects if, for instance, a defective drill bit disintegrates during use

Safely using a pillar drill

To prevent accidents while using pillar drills, it is, therefore, vital to always:

  • Wear provided protective gear (goggles, aprons and, if necessary, gloves)
  • Wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves
  • Either remove ties, scarves, etc. while using machinery or at least keeping it safely tucked in
  • Use provided safety guards
  • Follow training/instructions on how to safely operate pillar drills

Employers must minimise the risk of pillar drill-related accidents by:

  • Keeping machinery well maintained and in safe working condition
  • Providing necessary safety guards and personal protective equipment
  • Providing adequate training in the use of machinery and safe working procedures

Injured at work

If you had a work accident while using a pillar drill, could qualify for industrial injury compensation if:

  • Your work-related accident occurred during the last three years
  • Your work injury was caused by someone else

You could, for instance, make a work injury claim if you sustained a pillar drill injury because your employer did not provide you with suitable protective equipment or training.
