    Safety tips for your office kitchen


    Although seemingly innocuous, an office kitchen can present a minefield of dangers including trips, head injuries, electrocution, burns, and poisoning. The most common injuries are caused by faulty electrics, leftover mess, and dangerous slippages. This article explains some simple ways to prevent injury in the office kitchen environment.

    Making an office kitchen safe

    It may seem like an obvious piece of advice, but it’s surprising how many offices contain old and dangerous equipment, including malfunctioning microwaves and kettles with frayed and dangerous electrical leads. Did you know that older microwave ovens can leak radiation, for example, interfering with pacemakers and causing cataracts and burns? Sometimes injuries can be caused in the workplace even without the victim’s knowledge. In order to keep everybody safe, make sure that all equipment is relatively new and regularly replaced.

    All potential dangers in the kitchen environment should be clearly signposted. A very hot water tap, for example, should be signalled with a ‘danger’ sign. A ‘wet floor’ sign should also be brought out every time the floor is mopped to minimise slippages. If the kitchen contains a cooker, there should be clear directions on how to use it.

    Many injuries in the office kitchen are caused, unfortunately, by other users creating a mess or misusing the electrical appliances. In order to minimise these dangers, all employees should be made aware of the importance of using electrical appliances correctly and always clearing up all spillages immediately. The office should be thoroughly cleaned each day to ensure there is no build-up of grease or mess which could create hazards.
