Safely using an iron

Ironing is one of those tasks that although you do not have to do all the time, the pile of washing needing to be ironed soon grows and its time to get the iron out. However, due to the temperature this appliance reaches accidents can and do occur whilst using, sometimes worse than a simple slip, trip or fall injury.

How accidents occur whilst ironing

The most common injury caused by the iron are burns which can be quite substantial. These burns can be caused by touching a piece of clothing that the iron has just been on or worse, directly from the heated plate.

Other accidents that can occur from ironing can be a trip injury from falling over the wire or the ironing board itself.

How to stay safe whilst ironing?

The first thing to remember whilst ironing is to make sure any children stay away from the iron when it is on. Kids are much more likely to run and sustain not only a fall injury but also potentially a nasty burn if they fall into the iron or if it should fall on them.

Always make sure you stand the iron up when you are not using it so that you don’t damage any furniture. Most irons have a safety turn off switch that means if it hasn’t been used for a while it will turn itself off so if you or someone else has a slip, trip or fall near it they shouldn’t burn themselves.

Finally, when it is cooling down make sure you put it on a heatproof surface. This means that it won’t damage any surface and the heat should not transfer to the surface it is on causing much worse than a simple slip, trip or fall injury.

Unfortunately, accidents can and do happen around the home. If you have had a slip, trip or fall within the last 3 years that wasn’t your fault you may be able to make a claim.
