    What is Road Smart?

Road Smart is a police initiative run by Avon and Somerset police and aims to use education to drive home the message about the importance of road safety. The initiative runs a series of workshops for different age groups and tailors them to address specific road safety issues regarding that group. It also teaches road users the basics of road safety and the potential repercussions of practising unsafe driving. A driver safety workshop is held free for 17 to 24 year olds who may have recently passed their test. The workshop runs for two hours and discusses the top four causes of young driver collisions to make attendees aware of the main risks to others if they practise unsafe driving. There are also workshops for those aged 25 and over which address the main issues of more experienced drivers. Attendees can learn about speed management, defensive driving techniques and how to avoid the most common collisions. In addition, drivers can learn about fuel management. Many experienced drivers develop bad habits and the courses offered by Road Smart are there to help road users practise road safety on a regular basis.

    Basic road safety management

Simply avoiding distractions like mobile phones, wearing a seatbelt, driving under the speed limit and following the Highway Code can make a huge impact on the road. The risk of a collision is significantly reduced among those who practise road safety and the risk of fatalities on the road is also reduced. Initiatives like Road Smart have helped drivers become more aware of the risks associated with driving recklessly and help to reduce the number of accidents on the roads. However, there are some drivers who do not practise road safety and could put others at risk. If you have suffered an injury as a result of another driver’s negligence, you can contact Accident Advice Helpline to claim compensation.
