Road crash statistics reveal Sevenoaks as cycle accident black spot

By David Brown on October 8, 2014

An analysis of data compiled during 2013 relating to deaths and injury on Kent’s roads has revealed that Sevenoaks is Kent’s cycle casualty capital.

The road crash statistics showed 49 people were involved in cycle accidents including 13 who were seriously injured or killed. Last year, Sevenoaks became a more dangerous place for cyclists, with road crash statistics from 2012 revealing that only 14 people were involved in collisions, including four who were seriously injured or killed.

Nobody seems to know why the figures have risen, and John Morrison of the Sevenoaks Cycle Forum commented, “Overall the figures don’t look good. It could simply be more people are cycling in Sevenoaks or that cycling infrastructure here is woefully inadequate.” The county saw cycle collision figures drop in 2012 but rise by 106 last year.

Other parts of Kent saw higher figures when it came to road collisions. Tonbridge and Malling may only have had 37 bike casualties in 2013, but two people aged 65 to 99 were killed and 10 people were seriously injured in road collisions, the highest number in the county.

Protect yourself from cycle accident injury

There are steps you can take to protect yourself from injury. Always wear a cycle helmet and protective clothing, which could help prevent serious injury in the event of a collision. You should also ensure your bike is well-maintained and has the proper equipment for cycling at night, such as lights. Accidents can still happen to anyone, so be aware of your surroundings and remember that just because you can see a motorist, doesn’t mean they have spotted you – so be cautious. If you’re involved in an accident that’s someone else’s fault, you could make a claim for compensation.
